Players can now experience Rockstar’s open world Western in virtual reality thanks to a new mod for Red Dead Redemption 2.

Developer Luke Ross, who also made a VR mod for Grand Theft Auto V, created the mod.
Virtual Reality Has Been My Happy PlaceThe Red Dead Redemption 2 VR mod is available in early access on PC for £8 per month to Patreon supporters, who will also gain access to future mods Ross plans to work on.

The game can be played in first-person or third-person mode with a gamepad in its current state.
UploadVR has captured a video of the VR mod in action, which you can see below.

Ross dismissed the possibility of a VR mod for Red Dead Redemption 2 in 2019, according to VRisrael2013, after benchmarking sessions led him to conclude that “there is no way that a new GPU will come out during 2020 that will be able to render RDR2 at the combination of quality, resolution, FOV, and frame rate that is required for proper VR.”

Ross explains on his Patreon page that he had to create a completely new framework for Red Dead Redemption 2: “Basically everything I built for the GTA V mod was now obsolete and needed to be rewritten from the ground up.”

He spent six months working full time on the mod after taking the plunge, and now plans to use Patreon to continue improving the Red Dead mod and mod other games such as Cyberpunk 2077, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Watch Dogs: Legion.

Last November, Red Dead Online, the online multiplayer component of Red Dead Redemption 2, was released as a standalone game. It’s also available on Xbox Game Pass.
